Jon Lowe was born in Ipswich in 1961and began playing the guitar and writing songs at 15. His father managed the Gaumont Theatre in Ipswich. This gave the young Lowe an insight into show business. Jon sings at folk evenings in Suffolk and organizes regular folk nights at the Brewers Arms in his home town. This album is much influenced by The Singing Postman. If there were such a thing as "The Singing Postman School' it would be top of the class. Jon sings his songs, corresponded with him and visited him in Grimsby.
The Suffolk Postman - Jon's first album. I asked Jon to record for Anglian Music. Roger Ling, Landlord of The Dukes Head, Coddenham, Jon and I wrote twelve new songs released here.together with one which Jon has taken from a Singing Postman album. Opening Time, Rushmere Heath, The Suffolk Postman, Saffron Walden Circular Saw Club, The Farmer's Night In The Pub, Breaking Up The Road, The tractor that's always in front of you and the high street butcher selling 50/50 pies (One horse one rabbit) are all featured here.
Gorn Up 'n' Down is Jon Lowe’s second album. ‘The Rector Of Stiffkey’ and ‘Spitfire’ are two previously unpublished lyrics written by Allan Smethurst The Singing Postman. Jon composed the music. There is also a new song dedicated to Allan called “Cheerio {Mind How You Go)”.
On this CD you can hear about the guy who’s probably a member of the Mafia and likes his evening pint. Once in the pub, he is almost certainly going to come across a character we call ‘The Bar Room Politician’. We have the dog so lazy that he`s ‘Hollerin’ ‘cause he’s sitting on a thorn’. We also have the vicar who’s getting good at going up and down - he has a three decker pulpit ! We relate the terrible hardship caused ‘When the old Kings Head ‘bant’ down’ - the brewery sent the colossal sum of one pound to the hardship fund. A special service was held in church for ‘These harrowing times’ as they were called. ‘The Farmer’s boy’ was an anthem in our Grandfathers time. I doubt if ever a harvest supper passed without this being sung. We have the OAP who is walking on the wild side and include a little medley of songs recorded while the glasses were being filled and the pipes being lit as night came on in.
